GLOSTER, Miss. – Leading national law firm Singleton Schreiber is hosting a virtual town hall alongside local advocacy groups on Thursday, February 20, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM CST to answer questions and discuss critical updates for the lawsuit against Drax-Amite Bioenergy. The company is alleged to have violated environmental laws, causing severe pollution in predominantly Black communities in Mississippi.
Drax Biomass markets itself as a leader in renewable power through sustainable biomass production and electricity generation. However, its Amite Bioenergy wood pellet facility in Southern Mississippi has emerged as a major polluter in the region, and as the world's largest consumer of wood pellets and the UK's biggest CO2 emitter, Drax's operations contribute to environmental degradation both locally and internationally, particularly as the pellets are transported to and burned at Western Europe's largest power station in the UK.
Drax has admitted that the Amite facility emits three to four times the authorized levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), initially attempting to hide these excessive emissions by submitting dubious test results which showed emissions levels 25 times below the true rate. These VOCs are precursors to ground-level ozone and smog formation, causing respiratory issues like asthma attacks and worsened bronchitis and emphysema. Children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions being most vulnerable.
“Drax claims its mission is to generate renewable, flexible, and dispatchable power for the UK. While this is an impressive and valiant effort, it is unacceptable to place the burden of severe pollution and health effects on one working class, predominately Black community to benefit wealthier areas,” said Letitia Johnson, partner at Singleton Schreiber LLC.
