Press Release

Los Angeles, CA - January 13, 2025

LOS ANGELES, CA – Singleton Schreiber today filed a lawsuit against Southern California Edison Company (SCE) and Edison International for damages related to the catastrophic Eaton Fire that began on January 7, 2025 in Los Angeles County.

The Eaton Fire has left a devastating mark on the communities of Altadena, Pasadena, Sierra Madre, and the surrounding areas, claiming the lives of 17 people as of this morning with six individuals missing and unaccounted for. The fire has scorched over 14,117 acres, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Despite the tireless efforts of firefighting crews, it is only 33% contained, with unusually dry conditions and shifting winds continuing to fuel its spread.

On January 9, 2025, Edison itself reported to the California Public Utilities Commission that its electrical equipment was located within the area where the blaze started. The lawsuit alleges that the fire began when Edison's electrical equipment contacted or caused sparks to contact surrounding vegetation. According to the complaint, Edison had identified the Eaton Canyon area as an extreme fire risk zone prior to the incident yet failed to take appropriate precautions. Singleton Schreiber leads the largest fire litigation practice in the country, having represented over 26,000 victims of wildfires, including over the Thomas, Woolsey, Bobcat, Silverado, and Fairview fires in which Southern California Edison was the primary defendant. The firm is also representing the ongoing Hurst fire in the San Fernando Valley under similar circumstances.

"The devastating Eaton Fire represents yet another catastrophic failure by Southern California Edison to protect the communities they serve. Since 2017, Edison's equipment has sparked the Thomas, Woolsey, Easy, Bobcat, Silverado, and Fairview fires, yet they continue to operate exposed power lines in high-risk areas during dangerous weather conditions," said Gerald Singleton, managing partner of Singleton Schreiber. "This was a preventable tragedy, and we intend to hold Edison accountable for putting their bottom line ahead of public safety."

The firm is holding a town hall tomorrow, January 14th, at 6:00pm PT to provide information and answer questions for those affected by the Eaton and Hurst Fires in Los Angeles County.
