Mosquito Fire Forces Thousands of Evacuations, Threatens Gold Rush Towns, Tahoe National Forest
The Mosquito Fire ignited September 6 near the Oxbow Reservoir in Placer County and quickly grew to nearly 30,000 acres. In the first days of the blaze, Cal Fire’s aircrafts had difficulty accurately mapping its perimeter due to the heavy, volcano-like smoke.
In just over 24 hours, the Mosquito Fire grew to 6,900 acres, and it was double that — 13,700 acres — by the following evening, extending south into El Dorado County.
The towns of Georgetown, Volcanoville, Bottle Hill, and Quintette were all ordered to evacuate, along with the Placer County town of Foresthill. Todd Valley, just west of Foresthill in Placer County, was also placed under mandatory evacuation orders.
