Background

Case details

The Drax pellet factory, operating under the name Amite BioEnergy, opened its doors in Gloster, Mississippi, in 2016. The state of Mississippi provided Drax with a substantial package of financial incentives and tax exemptions to establish the plant in Gloster, boosting local employment and economic growth in the area.

However, in 2018 Drax disclosed to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) that it had underestimated emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) since its inception, surpassing legal limits by over three times. It was not until 2021, nearly five years after opening, that the company came into compliance with standards for VOC emissions, following a $2.5 million fine—one of the largest Clean Air Act penalties in the state's history.

In 2022, the facility was found to be emitting Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs) at levels 50% above the permitted limit, leading to another violation notice from MDEQ in 2023. The penalty for this violation has not been decided.

Gloster residents have been exposed to high levels of pollutants at the hands of Drax, and many have reported multiple health issues, including breathing and respiratory problems. Singleton Schreiber has filed a lawsuit against Drax Inc. to hold the company accountable. If you or someone you know may have been affected, we encourage you to fill out a form. Together, we can work towards getting you the compensation you deserve and demanding a healthier Gloster.
