In 1981 Kathy started her career as a registered nurse working in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago. In 1986 she was recruited by San Diego Children’s Hospital for the position of staff nurse followed by the assistant manager of their PICU. San Diego won her heart and 35 years later, she’s still here. Her work in management led her to a position as an analyst working directly for the Senior Vice Presidents of Planning and Research, and Quality and Risk Management. One of her major projects was coordinating teams of physician experts in particular medical diagnoses to develop Clinical Pathways using Best Practices nationwide – aka, the standard of care. Through those years she worked closely with Risk Management, administrative experts, and clinical experts in formulating protocols to treat patients. In 1992 she and a risk management colleague started a small consulting practice in San Diego – Medical Litigation Services (MLS). MLS consulted on both, the defense and plaintiff sides of catastrophic injury cases. On the defense side, Kathy had hospital clients, consulting on sentinel event investigations and claims. For plaintiff attorneys, she reviewed potential cases and provided a similar risk analysis as well as a litigation plan regarding medicine. After several years, Kathy was offered a full-time in-house position with one of her plaintiff clients where she worked until her daughter was born. It was then, in 2001 that Kathy, as a single mom, began consulting on an independent basis again. Flexibility in schedule was the priority in those years. Now, twenty years later that child is a grown woman, bringing Kathy full circle, thrilled to be back to an in-house position with SSMS. When not working, Kathy enjoys gardening and cooking.
